Identification and Instructional Process for English Learners
Students entering the English Learner (EL) program follow a structured process:
- Complete registration with the district.
- Take the Home Language Survey.
- Undergo a WIDA screener assessment.
- Parents/guardians receive notification of results.
- An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is created based on needs.
- Annual WIDA ACCESS testing assesses progress.
- Students are monitored for two years after reaching English Proficiency Level 5.
How Are English Learners Tested?
Elkhart Community Schools uses the WIDA screener, a one-time test for newly enrolled students to determine their English proficiency level (1-6).
