School Without Walls
Elkhart Community Schools’ landmark School Without Walls program gives students an opportunity to earn their Elkhart High School diploma (not a GED/HSE or homeschool diploma) through a hybrid model of online learning, in-person instruction, and required testing. This program is designed for students who have missed extended periods of school due to illness, family situations, or work—giving them a path to graduate with their cohort, attend high school events, and participate in school activities.
Five Block Schedule
School Without Walls follows a Five Block Schedule, based on the understanding that each course takes approximately 75 hours to complete. Students are expected to earn at least two credits every five weeks. Over an 18-week semester, this results in a minimum of six credits earned. Enrollment in the program is limited, and eligibility is reviewed on an ongoing basis.
Step 1: Meet with Counselor and Principal
Anyone interested in the School Without Walls program must first meet with their School of Study counselor and principal. This meeting will determine if the program is the right fit, or if the student may be better served through our Community Education program.
Step 2: Mentor Assignment
Once accepted, the student is assigned a mentor/teacher who will help create an Individual Academic Plan (IAP). The IAP outlines the timeline for coursework and expected completion. This mentor oversees all aspects of the student’s progress and serves as their advocate in community settings such as juvenile justice, internships, or collaboration with home high school guidance counselors.
The mentor/teacher also monitors daily attendance. Students may be required to attend in-person sessions as determined by their mentor.
